Portico Vine (aka the Panthers) has been shortlisted in a nationwide competition from talkSPORT, the world’s biggest sports radio station, and Wickes, the DIY and home improvement specialists, to win help in transforming their ageing/broken changing washrooms and disabled facilities.
The club are now calling upon the local community along with our wider ARLFC clubs/family to get behind them in a public vote which will decide the winner.
The UK-wide competition, in partnership with Wickes, was launched on Colin Murray’s show on talkSPORT offering grassroots sports clubs the chance to transform their buildings and facilities.
This week Portico Vine Amateur Rugby League Club were unveiled as one of three projects who have been selected to progress to the next stage of the competition – a public vote.
The club are hoping that the support of the local community will help them to develop their disabled facilities by voting for them at www.talksport.com/viy
Portico Vine Amateur Rugby League Club entered the competition as they are aiming to develop the disabled facilities at their club in order to provide much needed access for local community and visitor disabled public.
If chosen as winners, the work will include adding a disabled access ramp to the building, refurbishing and modernising the antiquated male and female toilet and washing facilities, along with creating disabled toilet facilities.
The makeover would help the club to start a disabled fitness/tea club and wheel chair rugby.
“If we were to be successful, the impact on our club, our members and volunteers would be massive and allow us to welcome a wider, diverse membership into the club and promote equality, inclusion for disadvantaged and disabled people in our community,” said Club Chairman Andy Connor.
“We hope that anyone with a spare 30 seconds will visit the talkSPORT YIY website and show their support for the club so that we can get even more people, and disabled people from our area involved with what we do, along with our vision, goals for our Portico community and wider NWC Amateur rugby league family in our region”
If successful, the building work will be carried out by young people at the club, in association with a social initiative called VIY.
VIY (Volunteer It Yourself) combines volunteering and DIY by helping young people aged 14-24 learn trade and building skills by fixing local community buildings. Young people gain vocational City & Guild accreditations as well as access to further training, work placement and apprenticeship opportunities.
Wickes will provide all of the materials and tools to complete the job for free and will also encourage their trade customers and staff to act as skilled mentors on the projects.
