Leeds Rhinos captain Danny McGuire will be sidelined for around two months with a knee injury sustained in the First Utility Super League champions’ opening match of the season.

McGuire, who has taken over the captaincy from the departed Kevin Sinfield, limped off 31 minutes into the Rhinos’ 12-10 home defeat by Warrington Wolves at Headingley on Thursday night and left the ground with his knee in a brace.

The 33-year-old half-back went for scans on Friday and put on a brave face as he posted the outcome on his Twitter account.

“Thanks for all the messages last night decent news back from scan so hopefully only miss a couple of months,” McGuire said.

“Was so proud to lead the lads out but back down to earth with a bang but that’s our sport and why we love it. Just work hard and get back asap!”

It means McGuire will miss Leeds’ World Club Challenge meeting with Australian champions North Queensland Cowboys on February 21 and coach Brian McDermott will have to find a new captain in the meantime.

State of Mind wish Danny a speedy recovery
