Former Great Britain centre Martin Gleeson is to join the backroom staff of Salford Red Devils after announcing his retirement.
Gleeson, 34, who missed the second half of the 2014 season through injury, will cut his coaching teeth with Salford’s academy ahead of the 2015 season.
The Wigan-born Gleeson scored 128 tries in 304 Super League appearances for Huddersfield Giants, St Helens, Warrington Wolves, Wigan Warriors, Hull FC and Salford and won 26 caps for Great Britain and England.
“I’m looking forward to my new career starting with developing the youth of Salford and taking my first steps as a coach,” Gleeson said.
“We’ve got some great youngsters at the club and I’m really looking forward to working with them.”
Salford chief executive Martin Vickers said: “Martin’s experience at the highest level of the game is second to none and this will be a fantastic way for our youngsters to start their professional rugby league careers coached by one of the leading players of the game in recent years.”
Gleeson, who began his professional career at Huddersfield in 1999, won both the Challenge Cup and Grand Final with St Helens and was twice included the Super League Dream Team. He went on to enjoy success at Warrington, was in the Wigan team that beat St Helens in the 2010 Grand Final and captained Salford in 2013.
