How would you like to hone your writing skills while working for a National Governing Body of sport, gain valuable insights into how it works and have behind-the-scenes access to national events at venues such as Wembley and Old Trafford?

The RFL is looking for a number of volunteer Student Media Officers for the 2016/2017 academic year and applications close on June 30.

You don’t need to have a great knowledge of Rugby League, but you do need to be resourceful, passionate and able to hit deadlines. Essentially, you will be reporting on student matches and compiling a weekly roundup of action, which will involve developing a network of contacts.

In addition, there will be opportunities to write features both for internal and external use and attend national events such as the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

The programme has been running for a number of years and participants have not only found that it enhances their writing skills, but the experience of working for the RFL has been enjoyable and useful in securing employment.

Here’s what some of our past volunteers have to say about the programme: Megan Joyce “The RFL’s Student Media Volunteer Programme provided me with the opportunity to develop my knowledge of sports media across all platforms. Having previously covered rugby union for a variety of media outlets, I was surprised at how quickly I became engrossed in Rugby League! “All of the staff at The Rugby Football League were very helpful throughout my time with the programme and gave me some useful advice, which I still use when working in a media environment today.”

Louise Warr “Despite not having a background in the sport, the programme helped me develop skills that have been integral in my career after uni and are transferable to many different sports. Taking part in the programme has opened so many doors for me, including live blogging the 2015 Grand Final for Sky Sports, and the support and knowledge that those involved have shared with me have been invaluable in progressing in my career.“
