Dr Allan Johnston – Wellness and Health in Athletes is presenting at the Sports and Exercise Medicine – Prevention, Management and Recovery Conference in Leeds this week
Sports Psychiatry and Mental Health
Dr Johnston an established Consultant Sports Psychiatrist will discuss the emerging field of Sports Psychiatry and its role in the wellbeing and performance of athletes. We will attempt to answer relevant questions in the field – Can there be health without mental health? Is mental health simply the absence of mental illness? How can we improve the mental health of our athletes, our teams and ourselves?
We will examine the known literature for the links between mental health and sport. In particular we will consider mental health at important career transitions such as selection/deselection, Injury and rehabilitation, chronic mental or physical illness, loss of performance or form, and expected or unexpected retirement.
Dr Johnston will share case examples from his experience of Sports Psychiatry within Individual, Team, Olympic and Paralympic sports in addition to his role as co founder and Deputy Chair to the Royal College of Psychiatrist Sports and Exercise Psychiatry Group, a new medical speciality.
Good luck Allan and have a great conference!
