Wigan Warriors have confirmed their World Club Challenge with Sydney Roosters will be played at Allianz Stadium in Sydney on Saturday 22 February.
The annual challenge match between the champions of the NRL and Super League will be held on Australian soil for the first time since Wigan beat Brisbane Broncos in Brisbane in 1994.
Wigan coach Shaun Wane, who was man of the match in his team’s 8-2 victory over Manly at Central Park in 1987, said: “It is great that the World Club Challenge returns to Australia after the UK has hosted the competition successfully for a number of years.
“The Roosters are a champion side but we are excited about travelling to Sydney for the game and the challenge that lies before us as we aim to be crowned world club champions for a fourth time.”
The Roosters, as Eastern Suburbs, won the first World Club Challenge at the Sydney Cricket Ground in June 1976, beating St Helens 25-2.
The Warriors intend to play a warm-up game en route to Sydney between February 12 and 16.
