Warrington Wolves have signed South Sydney’s New Zealand Test centre Bryson Goodwin for 2018.
Goodwin, 31, was due to join Leigh but Warrington stepped in following the Centurions’ relegation from Betfred Super League and agreed a transfer fee.
Goodwin, who took advice from his Souths team-mate Sam Burgess before completing the move, will be a straight replacement for Peta Hiku, who has cut short his stay in Super League for personal reasons, and has signed a two-year deal.
Warrington chief executive Karl Fitzpatrick said: “We spoke to Bryson earlier in the year and have been aware of his abilities for some time. When we lost Peta, we approached Leigh with an offer and fortunately they accepted.
“Bryson has got outstanding leadership qualities both off and on the pitch and will be a real asset to the team and culture we want to create. His reputation in the NRL is first class and with his international experience he’ll add real value to the club.”
Warrington are in a rebuilding phase after losing 10 players at the end of the season, including centre Rhys Evans to Leigh.
The Centurions plan to remain full-time in the Kingstone Press Championship but owner Derek Beaumont insists accepting Warrington’s offer represents good business.
Beaumont said: “Once I was aware that Bryson had strong interest from a safe Super League club and would take that option should we get relegated, I took the decision to accept a very strong and lucrative offer from Warrington.
“I appreciate that this will seem negative for the club but it has actually turned out to be a good piece of business for us under the circumstances.”
Goodwin has won 10 caps for the Kiwis and played extensively in the NRL since 2007 for Cronulla, Canterbury Bulldogs and the Rabbitohs.
“I’ve only heard really good things about Warrington from past players who have played at the club,” Goodwin said. “I also spoke to Sam Burgess and he only had good words to say too. Everyone knows it’s a big club and I’m looking forward to joining.”
