Leeds Rhinos have confirmed that stalwarts Jamie Jones-Buchanan, 37, and Carl Ablett, 32, have agree new deals with the club for 2019 whilst rising star Luke Briscoe, 24, has committed to a three year contract with the Emerald Headingley side.
Both Jones-Buchanan and Ablett were out of contract at the end of the 2018 season but have now agreed new deals ahead of returning to pre-season training next Monday.
This year will mark 20 years since Jones-Buchanan made his debut for the club against Wakefield on 7th May 1999. In total he has amassed 412 appearances for the club, placing him in thirteenth position in the club’s all-time appearance records.
Ablett is a seven time Grand Final winner and holds the record for most appearance in a Grand Final without defeat. An ever present in the Treble winning season in 2015, he has made 323 appearances for the club so far. He has signed a two year contract.
Luke Briscoe originally joined the Rhinos in 2012 from Hull FC before spells at Wakefield, Hunslet and Featherstone. His early chances at Leeds were hampered by injury and he moved on to join Rovers on a permanent basis. However, having returned to full fitness, he enjoyed an outstanding season at the LD Nutrition Stadium last year equalling the all-time British rugby league record when he scored in Rovers’ 17th consecutive match.
He finished the season at Emerald Headingley on a short term deal, collecting five tries in ten appearances and earning a new deal at the Rhinos.
Commenting on the new contracts, Director of Rugby Kevin Sinfield said: “We are pleased to be able to offer all three players new contracts. Jamie and Carl are outstanding clubmen who epitomise the culture and ethos we cherish here at Leeds. However, more importantly both players are still able to do a valuable job for the team on the field as well and have earned their new deals.
“There has never been any question over Luke’s ability however his early career was frustrated by injuries. He is a great example to any young player who suffers a set back. He has continued to work hard, listen to his coaches and give his very best every time he steps onto the field and deserves this contract with the Rhinos,” added Sinfield.
