The Head and Feed project is an innovative programme of sport and education supported by Sport Relief designed to raise awareness of mental health and emotional well-being within the local community.

One in four people in the UK will experience a mental health issue this year but by educating youngsters in schools and offering structured physical activity sessions to adults within Warrington, the Warrington Wolves Charitable Foundation will begin to tackle (!) stigma and raise awareness. The impact of sport on mental health cannot be underestimated on an individual’s physical, social and emotional well-being. Research has highlighted that regular participation in physical activity helps reduce muscle tension, relieve stress and provide relaxation, all of which are highly beneficial for people with mental health issues.

State of Mind 80 James Howes & David Morley

Mental health does not discriminate and can affect anyone at any point in their life. Sportsmen and sportswomen including Andrew Johns, former All Black John Kirwin, cricketer Marcus Trescothick, David Beckham and Team GB’s golden girl Victoria Pendleton have all recently highlighted their own personal experiences of mental health and the project will hopefully help people become more self aware of their own emotional well being.
