The 2016 Ladbrokes Challenge Cup third round draw was conducted at The Glyndwr University Racecourse Stadium.
The ties of the round were Rochdale Mayfield v Rochdale Hornets and York City Knights v York Acorn – these two fixtures are sure to attract a large crowd in these hotly anticipated local derbies. Cumbrian sides Kells and Wath Brow will welcome Kingstone Press League 1 clubs Hemel Stags and Toulouse Olympique XIII to their grounds. After their close win against Northumbria University, Siddal were rewarded with a home tie against Newcastle Thunder.
Taking place at the home of North Wales Crusaders, the Welsh side along with the 14 other Kingstone Press League 1 clubs joined by nine community teams in the draw as they all aim to progress to the fourth round when all 12 Kingstone Press Championship sides enter. Third round games will be played over the weekend of February 27-28.
Home teams were drawn by Lee Briers, who won the Challenge Cup with Warrington Wolves in 2009, 2010, 2012 and also lifted the Lance Todd Trophy for his performance against Leeds Rhinos in 2010. Former Leigh Centurions coach Paul Rowley, whose Championship side beat Wakefield Trinity Wildcats and Salford Red Devils in last year’s competition, drew the away teams.
