Hull FC have been working closely with former players Craig Greenhill and Adam Maher on a special fundraising effort, after the latter was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.
Maher joined the Black & Whites in 2000 from Gateshead, and went on to make 100 appearances for the club during the transition from the Boulevard to the KCOM Stadium between the turn of the millennium and 2003.
The back-rower, who touched down 25 times for the club, also played for Rochdale and Cronulla Sharks during his career. Following the news, the Black & Whites offered their support to Adam and his family ahead of a fundraiser even taking place on February 22nd, 2019 in Australia at Wynnum Manly Seagulls.
The club have been working closely with Adam’s friend and former team mate Craig Greenhill to arrange shirts, photographs, video footage and special messages from coaches and former team mates for the event next year.
Speaking to hullfc.com, Craig said: “The reason I signed with Hull FC was because of Adam. I had an offer from Leeds as well, but the decision was an easy one after talking with Adam.
“I have known Adam since we were eight years old playing for Wynnum Manly juniors, then at Cronulla and then Hull FC. “Adam is a no nonsense individual. You knew he would turn up every game and was great for the younger local players coming through. He was the sort of player everyone wanted to play with but also have a beer with after the game.”
On the event, he added: “After contacting Hull FC and the Ex-Players Association, the group and Adam himself have been blown away from the response, and the club have been great in the support they’ve shown us.
“A group of his close friends are putting together a function here in Australia in February, so we’re looking for some footage of his playing days.
“This year, before he was diagnosed with MND in February, we and some friends went to Sydney to watch Hull take on St George, and we were all blown away by the support of Hull FC fans before, during and after the game. Both myself and Adam have been very humbled.”
Fans can also help play their part in the event and show their support for Adam. The club will be collating any images or video footage that supporters have of Adam during his time with the Black & Whites, which will be sent over to Australia for the event, as well as given to Adam and his family.
